What shielding gas is used for 304 stainless steel welding?

When welding 304 stainless steel, the choice of shielding gas depends on the welding method used. The main goal is to prevent oxidation of the weld and ensure high weld quality and corrosion resistance. Here are the common shielding gas options for different welding processes:

welding 304 stainless steel

🔧 1. 304 stainless steel  TIG Welding (Tungsten Inert Gas Welding)

Shielding Gas: 100% Pure Argon (Ar)

Can be mixed with small amounts of hydrogen (1–5% H₂) to improve weld surface appearance (requires control to avoid hydrogen absorption)

🔧 2. 304 stainless steel  MIG Welding (Metal Inert Gas Welding)

Ar + 1–2% O₂ (Oxygen):

Ar + CO₂ Mixture (e.g., Ar+8%CO₂): Cost-effective, suitable for medium-thick plates, but CO₂ may slightly reduce corrosion resistance

Ar + He (Helium): Increases heat input, suitable for thick plates and high-quality welding

🔧 3. 304 stainless steel  Stick Welding (SMAW)

The shielding gas is provided by the coating on the electrode (such as E308L), so external shielding gas is not required.

✅ 304 stainless steel  Welding Recommendations

Avoid using pure CO₂ for welding 304:

For high-precision welding, pure Argon or Argon-Hydrogen mixtures (e.g., Ar + 2% H₂) are recommended.
